Welcome to Grenada Dementia Initiative

Grenada Dementia Care Initiative exists to inform, educate, inspire and empower individuals who have dementia of any type, their caregivers, relatives and stakeholders. We will operate with integrity, dignity respect, and compassion. We will offer choices that will serve to empower persons to have ‘quality of life’ and enjoy optimum health at every stage of their journey. Our goal is, ‘Empowering Lives Enriching Communities’

Who are We?

We are a group of individuals who desire to offer holistic help to people living with dementia in Grenada, their relatives and caregivers. We also aim to increase awareness of the condition and its symptoms, across Grenada. Research shows that awareness can reduce the stigma of the disease and help to create a safe space where people living with dementia can share their experiences, which can inform bespoke person-centred care at home in the community and at different care facilities.

Our Mission

Grenada Dementia Care Initiative therefore exists to inform, educate, inspire and empower individuals who have dementia of any type, their caregivers, relatives and stakeholders. We will operate with integrity, dignity and respect, and compassion. We will offer choices that will serve to empower persons to have quality of life and enjoy optimum health at every stage of their journey. Our goal is ‘empowering lives enriching communities’

Our dedicated team are
here to support you.

Our combined experience of over 30 years includes specialists in mental health and dementia studies, formal caregivers with many years of experience in caring for people with dementia, and family members and friends who have taken up the role of carer to look after their loved ones. As a team, we have dedicated our time and efforts to improving dementia care.

Our Locations

Facilities will be accessible across the seven parishes in Grenada and open five days a week. The centres hope to encourage social activities and reminiscence therapy, music therapy and arts and crafts sessions. We will also offer short open discussions, video presentations on brain health, covering topics on risk factors, diet and life-style. Diagnosis and respite care will also be available in our day care centres, where informal caregivers may take their relatives with dementia for the day. Meals and activities will be provided. Our goal is to offer holistic care covering every aspect of need and to learn from our participants on how best we can serve them.

Dementia Support Line

Our Support line is available seven days a week, to anyone who needs advice on caring for someone with dementia, or for anyone who is worried about memory or cognitive impairment and may be experiencing symptoms. Or if there is a crisis within the home, that is considered to be an emergency, help will be available. There is also advice available on our user-friendly website. We have developed a website that is easy to navigate for everyone. If you feel this is not the case then please give us your feedback.

I am interested in training in dementia care

We offer training in dementia care that covers the following areas:

  • What is dementia and what signs and symptoms to look out for

  • How to cope with behavioural changes that may come with dementia

  • What are the different types of dementias and how does each type affect a person?

  • What are the risk factors associated with dementia and how you may reduce your risk?

Care costs will vary according to need. We offer 24-hour care and will need the employment of two carers. We also offer day and night time care as well as weekends, public holidays, and short-term respite care for, from a few days to several weeks. This is for families who are struggling with constant care and need some respite.

For package deals and prices please call us on our contact numbers.

We are constantly looking for an extra pair of hands at our day centres. Duties will include serving snacks or meals, taking part in group games, chatting with an elderly person, assisting them with tasks and activities helping with bathroom needs, and going on day excursions.

If you would like to attend a day centre with your elderly relative, venues will be available across the parishes of Grenada. As there may be changes to the venue, please call us on the day to find the venue and time. If you will need transportation, please call to find out availability.

Exercise classes will be available and will consist of gentle movements to encourage joint movements and muscle stretching, and gentle aerobic movements to encourage blood circulation and deep breathing. Different genres or types of music will be used. These classes will be available each day as needs demand.

Brain health and cooking classes will be available once a week at each venue across the parishes. There will be a minimum cost for these classes and should not exceed $15 per person depending on demand. This will include talks on brain health in general, what not to put in the shopping cart, how to cook to retain nutrients in foods, simple recipes and cooking demonstrations.

Excursions will include, day outings to scenic beauty spots in Grenada, boat trips, picnics in the park, morning on the beach, and lunch at a restaurant. The cost of meals must be provided by the person booking the service and will include a contribution to the travel costs.

Counselling services and mental health assessments will be available by personal appointments. These will be carried out by the mental health professionals on our team. This will cover the diagnosis of dementia and other mental health conditions, like psychosis, depression and anxiety.
